Hospital de la Sante Creu i Sant Pau was a hospital until June 2009. The complex was built between 1901 and 1930 by the architect Lluís Domènech i Montaner.

History
The Paris banker Pau Gil was an original Catalan and after his dead he left a large sum money in his will for the construction of a hospital in his original city, to be named in honour of his patron saint.
Constructions began in 1901, and in 1911 there were already 8 blocks of the complex in use. In 1913 brought Lluís his son Pere Doménech i Roura to the project. Father and son worked together on the hospital until Lluís Domènech i Montaner´s death in 1923, he was 73 years old. The construction continued until 1930 led by his son, Pere Doménech i Roura. The hospital is the largest complex in Modernist style. The architect planned to create 48 individual buildings in a square. Outside the hospital is the church, which is also part of the hospital complex. Its floral decoration and use of sculptures by the best artists of the period emphasize in a remarkable way the structure of the buildings.

For Doménech i Montaner it was essential to be able to give sick people a feeling of well-being and beauty, according to him beauty has therapeutic value. After almost a century of existence and uninterrupted public use, the Hospital de Sant Pau has international respect from both the medical, architectural and artistic points of view.

The Hospital de Sant Pau is equally dared in its design and decoration, while at the same time the building was perfectly suited to the needs of the sick.

It was a fully functioning hospital until June 2009, it is currently undergoing restoration to build a museum and cultural center. There are still tours of the hospital being given several times a day.

The Basílica i Temple Expiatori de la Sagrada Família (English: Basilica and Expiatory Church of the Holy Family) commonly known as the Sagrada Família, is a large Roman Catholic church designed by Catalan architect Antoni Gaudí (1852–1926).

Since the first stone in 1882, the church is still not complete. Estimated is that the church will be ready in 2026-2028. The process of the church depends of the amount of money the visitors bring into the church. The construction budget for 2009 was €18 million. In the beginning only two people worked on the Sagrada Família, now there are more than one hundred people involved, including fifteen Architects.

History
Francisco de Paula del Villar designed the church for free. He designed it in the then prevailing neo-Gothic style. Fransisco began the construction of the crypt in 1882, but after a disagreement he was fired. From here on Gaudí took over. Gaudí finished the crypt under the original designs of Fransesco, but after he followed his own ideas. Gaudí has designed many beautiful buildings like Casa Milá, Casa Batllo and Park Guell but the Sagrada Família is his absolute masterpiece. It was also his last work. Gaudí devoted the last years of his life to the church. In 1926 Gaudí was hit by a tram, and died some days later. He was buried in the crypt of the Sagrada Familia.

Style
The style of the church is variously likened to Spanish Late Gothic, Catalan Modernism and to Art Nouveau or Catalan Noucentisme. While the Sagrada Família falls within the Art Nouveau period. Gaudí carried the Art Nouveau style far beyond its usual application as a surface decoration.

The church will have three facades that each represent a stage of the life of Jesus; the facade of the birth, the facade of suffering and the front is the façade of the glory, each with four bell towers.
The church is just a few meters below the Montjuïc, the highest hill in Barcelona. Gaudi did this out of respect for The Creator: he does not want to exceed with his building in height.

Visitors can access the Nave, Crypt, Museum, Shop, and the Passion and Nativity towers. Discover la Sagrada Familia yourself!

Antoni Gaudí i Cornet was a Spanish Catalan architect and figurehead of Catalan Modernism.

Antoni Plàcid Guillem Gaudí i Cornet was born on June 25 1852. Some historians say that he was born in “Mas de la Calderera,” his family’s country home almost exactly halfway between Reus and Riudoms. Others say he was born in Reus. Most of Gaudí’s identification documents from both his student and professional years gave Reus as his birthplace. But nobody knows for sure.

Gaudí spent his childhood between Reus, where his parents had their business, in a small cottage owned by his mother known as Mas de la Calderera – the Boilermaker’s house. Frequent contact with nature may have been one of the factors that stimulated two of the abilities which were to become crucial in the development of his work: the observation and analysis of the natural world.

Antoni Gaudí was a pupil at the Piarist School in Reus, where he stood out on account of his gift for analysing and rationalising questions.
A short time afterwards, he moved to Barcelona to study the final year of his secondary education and to do the foundation course at the School of Architecture.

The year 1878 marked the beginning of Gaudí’s intense professional activity. During that year he won a competition organised by the Barcelona City Council for his design and production of some street lamps (located in two squares, Plaça Reial and Pla de Palau).

In 1878 Gaudí met Eusebi Güell, the one who should later become his greatest promoter and good friend for over 40 years. For him he designed the Güell Estate, the Güell Palace, Park Güell and many other projects.

Between 1883 and 1888 he constructed the Casa Vicens and from there on he designed not only El Capricho, Bishop´s Palace and Rosary of Monserat but much more buildings.
In 1904 Gaudí worked on Casa Battló and the next project was Casa Milá in 1906. From 1915 Gaudí devoted himself almost exclusively to his masterpiece: the Sagrada Familia. In his last years he even lived on the workplace. Gaudí used highly symbolic content in the Sagrada Família, both in architecture and sculpture, dedicating each part of the church to a religious theme.

On 7 June 1926, Gaudí was taking his daily walk to the Sant Felip Neri church for his habitual prayer and confession when he was hit by a tram and lost consciousness. Because of his lack of identity documents and shabby clothing nobody recognized or helped him. Eventually a police officer took him to a hospital for the poor, the Hospital de la Santa Creu, where he died on 10 June 1926 at the age of 73. Two days later he was buried in the crypt of the Sagrada Familia.

Much of Gaudí’s work was marked by his four life passions: architecture, nature, religion and love for Catalonia. Gaudí studied every detail of his creations, integrating into his architecture a series of crafts in which he was skilled: ceramics, stained glass, wrought ironwork forging and carpentry. He introduced new techniques in the treatment of materials, such as trencadís, made of waste ceramic pieces. He will be remembered for years.

The monastery of Pedralbes is a Gothic monastery in Barcelona. Now it is a museum, and open for the public.

History
The monastery was founded by King James II(JaumeII) of Aragon for his wife Elisenda de Montcada in 1326. Ever since the nuns of the Order of Sint Clara run the monastery. The queen gave the monastery a few privileges, including the direct protection of the city of Barcelona, through de Consell de Cent(Council of the Hundred), which had the task to protect it in case of danger. Elisenda built a palace next to the monastery, where she lived after her husbands death in 1327. She died there in 1367. The remains of the palace were discovered in the years of 1970. May the 3rd 1327, the nuns moved in the monastery.

During the Catalan Revolt(1640) the nuns were driven out, but later they returned. A small amount of nuns still live in the monastery. The monastery was declared to a national monument in 1991. De gardens, the sick bay and the dining room are all open to the public.

In the church lies the tomb of queen Elisenda. Special about this tomb is that he is double sided. On the side of the monastery, the queen is pictured as a grieving widow and on the church side as a queen.

The name ´Pedralbes´ comes from the Latin Petras Albas(white stone), a white stone is the cornerstone of the apsis.

The monastery also houses a large collection of furniture and manuscripts fro the middle ages. The former dormitory houses a permanent exhibition of painters such as Rubens, Canaletto, Tintoretto, Velázquez and Beato Angelico. Another highlight of the monastery is the Capella St. Miguel. Here are series of frescos by the Italian artist Ferrer Bassa displayed.

The order of Sint Clara
In 1212 Clara van Assisi and Franciscus van Assisi came together and established the order of Sint Clara, later named as the Second Order of the Franciscanen. The order of Sint Clair still manages the monastery. Today, the nuns live in a more modern extension.

The Bullfight arena Las Arenas de Toros was build in 1900, but nowadays it is a huge shopping mall of 6 floors. The arena is located next to Placa Espanya, nearby the MNAC and the magic fountain.

The Arena was designed by the architect August Font i Carreras in 1900. The 52 meters of diameter arena has a capacity of 16,000 people. Many bulls and men have fought some bloody fights here. For over 75 year the arena was filled with people who watched and enjoyed the show of fighting man and bulls. Besides bullfights, the arena also hosted a few concerts(like the Beatles in 1966), rallies, boxing, the circus, and it was a military headquarter during the Spanish Civil War between 1936 and 1939. The last bullfight took place in June 1997 and the arena stood empty until architect Richard Rogers made plans for a commercial complex in 1999.

The shopping mall finally opened in 2011 and the project had a total cost of 70 million euros.

The history of Barcelona stretches back thousand years. However, known history started well over 2.000 years ago. Barcelona is currently a city with 1.673.075 people living in it. It is the second largest city in Spain.

Barcelona was founded by Phoenicians and Carthaginians. The original name of the Iberian village was Barkenon, Barcelino or Barci Nova. The Romans arrived on the 1st century B.C. choosing as capital of the region, first Tarraco (current Tarragona) and since the 3rd century A.D. Barkenon (Barcelona) . Remainings from this period can still be found in Barcelona. Visit the Plaza del Rei and the Gothic quarter to discover yourself!

For over 200 years, Barcelona was under Muslim rule, and after the Christian reconquest, it became a county of the Carolingian Empire and one of the main residences of the court of the Crown of Aragon. The fruitful medieval period established Barcelona’s position as the economic and political centre of the Western Mediterranean.

Catalonia became a part of the Crown of Aragon, but with the union of the kingdoms of Aragon and Castile, Barcelona began to loose its importance and power. During the following years, conflicts raised between Barcelona and Madrid. Barcelona was banned from trading with the American colonies and in the 17th century Catalonia went to war with Spain, declaring its independence with the support of France. In this war Spain lost the region of the Roussillon and other parts of Catalonia which are nowadays French territories, a situation that would happen again in the history of Catalonia when it was invaded by the French troops of Napoleon, however, this time the territories were returned to Spain after the fall of the French Empire.

The city began to gain importance again during the Industrial Revolution in the 19th century, being seat to the World’s Fair in 1888. Once its influence was recovered, Catalonia returned to its nationalist pretensions demanding more political freedom and boosting its cultural identity. On the 20th century, however, political repression during the dictatorship of Franco impeded the independence of Catalonia. After the government of Franco, Catalonia recovered its political authority and the city of Barcelona became one of the most important and attractive in Spain.

In 1992, Barcelona was the stage for the Olimpic Games, with great international success. And at this moment, Barcelona is the place to be for young and old, for Spaniards and for foreigners.
